The Richardson manor was an impressive sight of French Colonial architecture, just one of many in the appropriately named Quarter. As Danny and Sawyer’s cab pulled over in the Rie Coeur property, the Persian could almost cut the tension with her tiny claws. Ever since they first met back at the Little Ark Angel set, the tabby never really talked about his past. Not that he was brooding, unlike some of the other cats Sawyer had dated before; he just preferred avoiding the topic.

The wild vines crept up a nearly intact iron fence that surrounded the moderate-sized property, a whitewashed four-story building with a sprawling front deck complete with a swing. Others details included a gazebo, a shed and the family’s own final resting place. But the thing that stood out for the LA native Sawyer was a particular rose-lined edifice that had a cherry blossom tree growing besides it. Note to self, ask Danny about it…the female cat thought while they unpacked their things and entered through the dining room entrance.

The main dining room was something out of a history book; a mahogany table seating at least twelve with matching silk-lined chairs, porcelain dishware and exquisite portraits gave off an air of suffocating elegance.

“You told me you grew up in a farm in Kokomo!” Sawyer couldn’t help but quip. “And I did. This is just the family home.” Danny replied with a bashful smile. “Then why not stay here?”

“Because, my dear, it’s very hard to maintain a home this size under a simple mortician’s salary.” A thunderous voice responded from behind the two cats. “Samuel Richardson, charmed to make your acquaintance.” The owner was what Sawyer would’ve pictured Danny would look like after adding twenty more years: a medium-build orange tabby with piercing blue eyes, dressed in what seemed like 19th century garb with a defined goatee accentuating a sharp Southern face. Samuel took the Persian’s paw and gave it a respectful peck. “Sawyer McDermid, sir.”

But all reverence went out the window once Samuel turned to see his son. “You finally decided to show your old man some respect and actually came when I told you to.” Danny’s demeanor suddenly changed into a sarcastic grin. “No thanks to you. Now what’s this about calling everyone back here?” “All in due time, boy. Your brothers and sisters should be arriving shortly.” Samuel answered as he turned around and proceeded to exit the room.

Once the patriarch was gone, Sawyer stared at her boyfriend with slight confusion. “What just happened?” Danny shook his head and faced her. “It’s a long story, but let’s leave it at that the only time I ever want to see my father is when I don’t see him.” After walking around (in Sawyer’s case, exploring) the main foyer and staircase, a limo showed up and opened its doors. Danny grimaced. “Here we go.”

The only two people the Persian cat recognized from the parade were Paul and Wade, Danny’s close friends; the others, not so much. A svelte ginger tabby with enormous curls of hair and dressed in haute couture lively stepped off with her stiletto heels while a younger, slightly huskier version of Samuel caught up. “She’s Samantha Lee but if you ever run into her, you call her Lady Lee if you wanna keep your paws.” Danny explained. “The other one’s Akira Monroe, Monroe for short. He’s a doctor over at the Louisiana State Hospital.”

Sawyer smiled slyly as she watched the guests enter from the second floor. “You didn’t tell me you had a doctor for a brother.” “Trust me, he doesn’t get that much tail as you think.” The last guest came not from the car but from the yard. A small tabby with a poofy dress on par with Darla Dimple’s own and flowers in her ears scampered inside. Danny smiled as he pointed her out. “That’s Sae Marie, dad’s favorite. She was born a year before our mother passed away.” The white cat gave him a small kiss on the cheek. “You miss her, don’t you?” “Who wouldn’t?” the tabby replied with a kiss on her lips.

Samuel returned to the foyer and opened the dinning room doors. “Show time. Wait here, ok?” Danny advised as he joined his siblings downstairs. As Sawyer watched the Richardson children disappear through the opening, the one called Samantha Lee shot her one hell of a dirty look. She sat on the stair step, rather confused and annoyed. Excuse me Lady Lee, but what crawled up your ass and died?
